Welcome to Trezor.io/Start: Secure Your Digital Assets
Your ultimate guide to **starting up your new Trezor** hardware wallet and achieving true **self-custody**.
The Essential Trezor Setup Process
Congratulations on taking the most important step in cryptocurrency **security**! This official guide will walk you through the simple, step-by-step initialization for your **Trezor Model One**, **Trezor Model T**, **Trezor Safe 3**, or **Trezor Safe 5**. This entire process should take about 15 minutes.
1.Verify Your Device & Download Trezor Suite
Before connecting, inspect your Trezor packaging. Check that the **holographic seal** (or packaging) is intact and shows **no signs of tampering**. If anything looks suspicious, **DO NOT PROCEED** and contact support immediately.
Next, you need the official software application, **Trezor Suite**. We recommend the desktop version for the highest security and best user experience.
Download the official **Trezor Suite desktop app** from the correct source (Trezor.io/Suite).
Alternatively, you can use the **Trezor Suite for web** application.
Once installed, launch **Trezor Suite** and connect your **Trezor hardware wallet** via the provided USB cable.
Your brand new **Trezor device** is shipped **without firmware** as a critical **security** measure. This step installs the official, validated software onto your **hardware wallet**.
In **Trezor Suite**, click **'Set up my Trezor'**.
Select **'Install firmware'**. The software will download and install the latest **Trezor firmware** to your device.
For Trezor Safe devices, a dedicated **Device Authentication Check** will run to confirm your device is genuine and safe for setup. This is a vital anti-counterfeit feature.
Click **'Continue'** once the **firmware installation** is successfully completed.
**Security Tip:** Always perform the **firmware** installation only when prompted by the official **Trezor Suite** software.
3.Create New Wallet and Secure Your Wallet Backup
This is the single most important step for securing your **Bitcoin** and **crypto assets**. You will create a new wallet and receive your **Wallet Backup** (also known as the **Recovery Seed**).
Select **'Create new wallet'** in the **Trezor Suite**.
Choose your preferred backup method (e.g., **Standard Seed Backup**).
Click **'Create backup'** or **'Begin backup'**.
Your **12, 20, or 24-word Wallet Backup** will be displayed **ONLY** on your **Trezor** screen. **Critically, you must write these words down on the provided Recovery Seed cards, in the correct order.**
Confirm you understand: **Never make a digital copy** of your **Recovery Seed**—no photos, no emails, no typing it into your computer.
Your device will prompt you to **verify specific words** to ensure you've recorded them correctly.
⚠️ **YOUR FUNDS DEPEND ON THIS!** Store your **Wallet Backup** offline in a secure, hidden location, separate from your **Trezor device**.
4.Set a Strong PIN Protection for Device Access
The **PIN** adds a layer of protection against unauthorized physical access to your **Trezor hardware wallet**.
In **Trezor Suite**, click **'Continue to PIN'** and then **'Set PIN'**.
Your Trezor will prompt you to **'Turn on PIN protection'**. Confirm on the device.
**Enter your new PIN** directly on the device (Model T/Safe) or by referencing the changing keypad on the device and clicking the corresponding dots on your computer screen (**Model One**).
You will be asked to re-enter your **strong PIN** for confirmation.
**Recommendation:** Use a **PIN** of at least 4 digits, but you can choose up to 50 digits for maximum **security**. Do not share your **Trezor PIN** with anyone.
5.Name Your Device and Complete Setup
You are almost ready to start managing your crypto!
Choose a recognizable name for your **Trezor hardware wallet**.
You can select which **cryptocurrencies** and **coins** you wish to activate and display in the **Trezor Suite** dashboard (this can be changed anytime).
Click **'Complete setup'** to finish the process.
Select **'Access Suite'** to open your new, secure crypto management interface.
You can now safely move your **Bitcoin** and other **crypto assets** from exchanges or software wallets to your secure, offline **Trezor hardware wallet**. Welcome to true **self-custody**!
Need More Trezor Security?
Once you are comfortable with the basic setup, consider these advanced **Trezor security** features:
**Passphrase (Hidden Wallet):** An optional, additional layer of **security** that creates a completely new, hidden wallet on your device, accessible only with your **Recovery Seed** AND your chosen **Passphrase**. It is a powerful feature for advanced users seeking maximum protection for their **crypto**.
**Tor Integration:** Use Tor in Trezor Suite for enhanced privacy when transacting and connecting to the network.
**Multi-share Backup (Shamir Backup):** Available on certain models, this advanced method allows you to split your **Wallet Backup** into multiple unique shares, adding another sophisticated layer of redundancy.
